Everything That Remains is a heart-felt, inspiring story about two friends and their road towards a minimalist lifestyle. Joshua Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus provide a personal look into their lives as they discovered minimalism and started their now widely known blog TheMinimalists.com, helping thousands of others become motivated to start living intentionally and more simply. Their stories are both humorous and inspirational, telling about their childhood, friendship and climb to the top of the corporate ladder, and their subsequent jump into the world of simplicity.
Joshua takes center stage as he writes first-hand about both of their stories, with Ryan interjecting his comments throughout the book as witty notations, definitely not to be overlooked in the reading. As they share their personal circumstances and back stories that led to the ultimate decision to live more simply, I was thoroughly entertained and motivated to look even more closely at my own life and commitments, as well as my physical belongings to make sure I am living my own intentional life. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Joshua, Ryan and Colin Wright move to a cabin in Montana to work and enjoy the peace that comes from being immersed in nature. A Walden Pond type of experience that provided the landscape and environment they needed to produce this book.
The book is divided into two parts, fittingly called ‘Everything’ and ‘Remains’, with smaller sub-sections that guide us through both Joshua and Ryan’s journeys of life from childhood to their current lives today, allowing us to see the varied circumstances that shaped them and provided an atmosphere where minimalism and simplicity would come into play by the time they reach their 30’s. Reading about their own personal struggles and motivation to change has inspired me and many other readers to continually evaluate their own actions and possessions, making sure they are truly on course and living a life of personal value.
This book should be a staple for all those interested in learning about minimalism and simplicity. Joshua and Ryan are two of the greatest advocates for simple living and are a wonderful example of how even those who are feeling stuck in the general rat race of life and careers can take steps to live more intentionally and minimally.
